It seems that Montrose ‘keeper Lucas Birnstingl was so disgusted with his performance in Saturday’s derby at Links Park that he’s called it a day.

Many of the Gable Endies’ fans might have been happy to send Birnstingl to Coventry after he fluffed a free kick from David Crawford into his own net, gave away a penalty and was red carded all in the same match.

But, no, it is reported that he has decided to head home to Canada.

Speaking to our sister paper, the Montrose Review, Gable Endies’ boss George Shields revealed: “The downside from Saturday is that we had our goalkeeper sent off and after the game he informed me that he had let me, himself, his team-mates and all the fans down and that he was moving back to his home in Canada.

Often you hear about a match having everything. However, it would be fair to say that Saturday’s clash at Links Park had more than everything!

And it must be unique in one goalkeeper scoring and the other being sent off in the same match.

It would be fair to say that Montrose haven’t had the best of luck with goalkeepers this season.

Saturday was the second consecutive match their number one had seen red, with Stuart McKenzie having had an early bath a week earlier against Queen’s Park.

McKenzie was also sent off against Albion Rovers.
