TWO ARBROATH golfers featured in a four-way tie for the individual scratch prize in the Midland Golfers’ Alliance JB Motors Team Competition at Kirriemuir last Wednesday.
Steven Cargill and Scott Graham, both Arbroath, and Willie Hutton, Pitlochry, and Bob Redpath, Scotscraig, all scored one over par 69.

Arbroath Academy II 2, Monifieth 2
ARBROATH Academy Badminton Club played their first match in the Angus Badminton League last Tuesday evening when the gents’ second team faced Monifieth.
The Academy team had a mix of youth and experience with veterans Steve Bremner and Steve Duncan and the youth of Stephen Roberts and Jack Bremner. Monifieth were expected to prove a tough test.
The match was over 30 minutes late in starting as Monifieth turned up later than expected. The experienced pairing of Steve Bremner and Duncan started well with a 21-8, 21-9, win against Brian Flynn and Gordon Smith.
The young pairing of Jack Bremner and Stephen Roberts put up a great fight against Fraser and Rodgers and they were unlucky to lose 18-21, 19-21. After the first round of games the score was tied at 1-1.
The pairing of Steve Bremner and Steve Duncan won again to put the second team back ahead before the youngsters were beaten by Flynn and Smith 8-21, 13-21. After the second round of games the score was tied at 2-2.
In the final round of games Steve Duncan and Jack Bremner won a close first set 21-10 against Flynn and Rodgers before dropping a close second set. In the final game of the night Steve Bremner and Stephen Roberts lost to Fraser and Smith 18-21, before fighting back to win the second set 21-17 to save the match.

Smith, 8-21, 13-21; J. Bremner and S. Roberts lost to A. Fraser and R. Rodgers, 18-21, 19-21; J. Bremner and S. Duncan drew with B. Flynn and R. Rodgers, 21-19, 15-21; and S. Bremner and S. Roberts drew with A. Fraser and G. Smith, 18-21, 21-17.
This was a good start to the season for the gents’ second team. The experience of Steve Bremner and Steve Duncan was vital but the best thing was how well both the youngsters, Jack Bremner and Stephen Roberts, performed on their debuts and each took a set on the night to make an instant contribution.
