BRECHIN Thistles ladies' hockey team enjoyed a comfortable home victory on Saturday in their first game of 2010 which was a rearranged Midlands League fixture against Blairgowrie at Arbroath.
Thistles put pressure on the visiting team keeping them within their half winning a short corner. It was Ashleigh WILSON who took a powerful strike from the top of the circle after an accurate push out from Lesley Niven to give the team a 1-0 lead.
The home side kept their cool in this winter battle despite trying to find their rhythm after the long break. Lesley Niven's drive and enthusiasm down the left wing inspired Brechin to pressurise the opponents and force them into making a number of errors. Despite successful passing from the back that set up attacks, Thistles struggled to convert the chances.
Half-time: Brechin Thistles 1, Blairgowrie 0.
A positive talk from coach Dave Hunter motivated the team to come out fighting after half time. This was evident when Ashleigh WILSON drove the ball into the circle and fired into the top right-hand corner to make it 2-0.
Shortly after, Ashleigh WILSON silenced the away team, completing her hat-trick when she flicked the ball over the 'keeper after a rebounded strike from Niven.
Brechin continued to dominate the match with Blairgowrie struggling to get into their attacking half. Despite several attempts, Thistles continued to intercept passes out from the 'D' and create attacks on the Blairgowrie defence.
The quick effective passing from Katy August and Emma Ewen allowed the midfield players to get into the 'D' and create opportunities at goal. It was not long when a quick ball from Sarah Reid was played to Christie Morgan to drive to the 'D'. She forced the Blairgowrie 'keeper to come off the goal line, allowing Ashleigh FORFAR space at the left post to net the fourth goal of the game.
The homesters were now in full swing and even more so when young Brechin defender Donna Simpson intercepted several attacks and drove up the pitch allowing other players to get into a position to threaten the goal. And it was 15-year-old Katy AUGUST who positioned herself well on the left post and knocked in her first ever club goal and fifth goal of the game into the net.
Thanks were extended to all the supporters who braved the bitter cold wind and to Tracey Duke for umpiring.
