ARBROATH drift racer David Waterworth recorded his best result of the British Pro Drift Championships on Saturday.
He had experienced disappointment when he was knocked out in the first round of a meet in Wales. In the following month's event at Norfolk Arena, engine problems ruled his Nissan 200SX out. David was able to borrow a fellow competitor's car but he fa
iled to qualify.
However, with a faulty fuel baffle repaired David was fully prepared for Saturday's races at Teesside Autodome and qualified sixth, despite changeable weather which saw a downpour of rain midway through the session.
The drivers then moved on to the larger twin drift track which, ran in reverse and posed a new challenge to all the competitors.
With drivers racing heel to toe and judges marking for style and execution twin drifting is an exciting challenge which is new to David this year.
Despite this he knocked out rivals Mike Gaynor and Chris Hackwood and experienced drifter Dave Walbrin.
David explained that it was a close battle but his rival made a mistake in the final corner which saw his wheels touch the grass earning a points fine.
In the final David faced Matt Carter and took an initial lead. However, through the hairpin he dropped back and lost the initiative. David battled back in the final stages but was just pipped into second place.
David's car, sporting its new orange paint job, is likely to be heavily featured in the television coverage of the race day which will be shown on Sky Sports at a later date.
His next race falls on July 19 at Lydden Hill, Kent, where David hopes to go one better.
