THE VOTES have been cast and counted and now the winners of a community award campaign can be announced.

The competition was fierce among the 10 Arbroath groups nominated in the ‘Giving back to the community’ campaign shortlist, but the winner was clear.

The League of Friends of Arbroath Infirmary and Little Cairnie Hospital emerged the eventual winners of the scheme and will be awarded a grant of £5,000.

This group raises cash to purchase amenities for patients in Little Cairnie Hospital and Arbroath Infirmary, and provides everything from home comforts and visits to medical equipment when necessary.

Coming in second and receiving a prize of £3,000, was the Arbroath branch of Help for Abandoned Animals, which this week renamed itself Angus Dog Rescue.

This dog centre provides a sanctuary for mistreated and abandoned animals, and a support service for dog owners and is staffed by volunteers.

Hot on their heels was the Arbroath Skatepark Project which will be presented with a cheque for £2,000.

This project aims to create a skatepark in Arbroath to create a worthwhile diversion for young people in the town and will invest the money in the construction project and further promotion to attract financing.

The ‘Giving back to the community’ campaign was the brainchild of businessmen Valy and Shiraz Ossman, who have been working in Arbroath since the early 1990s.

The two brothers had always found the town a welcoming place and wanted to do their bit for the burgh in return.

Valy said: “Arbroath and the people here have always supported us and now we want to give something back to the community.”

They donated a pot of £10,000 which would be split three ways and was intended to benefit good causes that helped Arbroath. Working with the Arbroath Herald, the brothers then asked our readers to nominate worthy causes, which were eventually whittled down to 10, then they voted for the group which they felt was the most deserving.

A presentation ceremony will be scheduled for sometime in the near future, watch this space for details!
