NORTH East MSP Alex Johnstone is urging those bereaved through military service to ensure that they are claiming all of their entitlements under the War Pension Scheme.
Mr Johnstone explained: “A war widow’s or widower’s pension can be paid where a late spouse’s or civil partner’s death was as a result of service before April 6, 2005.
“Many people are unaware that new claims can still be made. Prior to 2005, a war widow could not keep her pension if she married again. This remains the case in some instances, but many people may be unaware that where a pension had ceased due to remarriage or living with a new partner, war widows can reclaim their pension if that relationship ends.”
Mr Johnstone concluded: “Anyone who feels they may be entitled to a war widow’s pension can receive more information from the Veterans-UK helpline on 0800 169 2277.”
