A CARMYLLIE woman has turned her hobby into a business after her family suffered financial hardship due to the recession.

Stay at home mother of two Vicky Topen decided to make the leap into business after her husband, Liam, was made redundant.

Vicky had often been asked about a balloon designing business after providing displays for friends and family and her sons’ primary school in Friockheim.

Although Liam has since found another job, Vicky was still keen to get the balloon business up and running approached the Angus Centre for Enterprise at Angus College for help.

Vicky said: “The help I received through the Enterprise Centre was amazing. I had no idea about how to deal with the Inland Revenue, register as self-employed or what I legally needed to do. They gave me lots of help and advice, helped me to put together a business plan and even researched other similar businesses to give me pointers. It was brilliant having someone to talk to.”

With their help Vicky launched Helium Designs in July and has since done designs for Tesco and Leuchars.

You can find Helium Designs on Facebook, or call 07815 132592 or email at HeliumDesigns@live.co.uk.
