ARBROATH U3A’s local history group recently participated in the production of a BBC2 eight-part series entitled ‘Story of the Nation’ with Michael Wood dealing with the social history of Britain.

The activity leader, Harry Bruce, was contacted by the programme researcher and he organised a group of people from the organisation who, along with Fiona Scharlau from Angus Archives and Francis Webster who is related to the Webster family that owned mills in the town, participated in a shoot in Arbroath Library.

The discussion centred on the role of the flax industry in the town in the past. The series will be shown on BBC2 in the spring of next year.
