One of Scotland’s top magic shows is to bring an internationally renowned magician to Arbroath in what is hopefully an expansion into Angus.

The Trickery, an Aberdeen-based magic and cabaret production, will bring their show and superstar Dutch magician Fritz Alkemade to the Arbroath Community Centre on September 6.

Iain McCarron from The Trickery said: “We’ve had some of the biggest acts in magic coming up to Aberdeen, proper heavyweights right now of magic.

“Aberdeen didn’t have a cabaret scene like Edinburgh or Glasgow but now that we have established that we want to show magic off to everyone.

“There are other allied arts that come under that label such as acrobats, jugglers, pickpockets, burlesque, Kabuki theatre, fan dancing etc.

“It’s the sort of stuff you would only see at the Fringe and our goal is to make it accessible to the masses.”

The Trickery has been running for the last three years in Aberdeen on the first Sunday of the month and star of the show, Fritz, has been touring solidly for the last 18 months or so through Australia, New Zealand, Los Angeles and also at the Edinburgh Magic Festival, but it was through the magic lecture circuit that Iain met the Dutch performer.

Iain said: “Fritz is quite a big star in Holland. He’s got a soft spot for Scotland and he’s coming back over to do another lecture and while we had him it was the perfect chance to take the show on the road while we had that big name.

“The best way to describe it is as Classical Comedy Magic. It’s close up on a stage, not big illusions.”

For Iain, Arbroath was an obvious choice for The Trickery’s first foray into Angus. He explained: “My dad lives in Dundee and we’re doing the Dundee Tattoo Festival on the 16 and 17th of August, and although we don’t want to go back to Dundee too quickly we wanted to go to the biggest town between Aberdeen and Dundee.

“I have memories of coming through to Arbroath as a child with my dad for carnivals so it made sense to me to come here.

“If we’re successful we’d like to do more shows in the bigger towns like Montrose, Carnoustie, Brechin.”

Well-known Arbroath magician Michael Brandie has taken time out from preparing for his own stageshow ‘Deception’ at the Webster Memorial Theatre on September 19 to add a local touch to proceedings by opening for The Trickery with a 15 minute showcase.
