A PASSENGER train travelling into Arbroath narrowly escaped derailment after striking a vacuum cleaner that had been left hanging from a footbridge.
The incident occurred at around 8.51 p.m. on Saturday evening when the 6.42 p.m. Inverurie to Edinburgh service was approaching the town from the north around the Dens Road area.
Fortunately, no damage was caused by the incident and the driver was able to carry on with the train’s journey.
The hoover was then removed by a member of the public and the driver of a freight train, which had been warned about possible debris on the track on approaching Arbroath.
British Transport Police have now launched an investigation and are searching for those responsible for leaving the hoover in such a dangerous position.
The incident comes just six months after another train derailed at Inverkeilor, which again was caused by an object being deliberately left on the track.
Anyone with information on the incident should contact British Transport Police on 0800 40 50 40 quoting reference 506 of 06/04/13 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
