Traffic headache as major works begin

MONDAY marked the start of major roadworks in Arbroath causing misery for commuters and local people.

Dundee Road between Infirmary Brae and the Westway is now shut for eight weeks while road reconstruction works are carried out by Angus Council.

A diversion is in place sending drivers on to the Westway and Keptie Road while the town’s main link road is out of action.

This is also added to the fact that a stretch of Keptie Street between Helen Street and Catherine Street has temporary traffic lights in place while resurfacing takes place.

And since Monday when the works began, the Herald has been inundated with people voicing their concerns and wondering why these improvements are both taking place at the same time.

A user of our website calling himself ‘Arbroath resident in a traffic jam’, said: “There has been little warning if any and the resulting traffic congestion on Monday alone should make them re-think this as a good idea.

“The homes on the diversion are now under siege from traffic from early in the morning to well after 6 p.m.”

Meanwhile reader Ian Angus said: “It is gridlock for most of the day from Elliot all the way round to the bottom of Grant Road and beyond. Conditions are bad enough for locals who know their way about but it must be even more frustrating for any visitors to the town!”

It is hoped Keptie Street works will be finished at the end of the month, while Dundee Road will be closed until March 30.
