ARBROATH is now officially a Fairtrade town after the local Fairtrade action group received the welcome news on Wednesday.
The group has worked hard to get local businesses and workplaces to take a Fairtrade pledge and encouraging local shoppers to buy Fairtrade products.
The Arbroath Fairtrade Action Group is now awaiting the official certificate confirming the town’s Fairtrade status after receiving the news by email.
And group leader Mary Reid was more than delighted to receive the confirmation.
She said: “I want to say a big thank you to the committee which has worked hard to get the application in. And to the retailers, catering outlets and workplaces who signed our statement of support that gave us the paper evidence, thank you because that let us meet another goal.
“Our schools and churches have done some excellent work for Fairtrade over the years and I just want to say thank you for helping with the goals for the application and keep up the good work.
“The Arbroath Herald gave the press coverage that was needed for the application. The Herald staff has been so helpful over the last year and have given so much encouragement to our steering group.
“And the people of Arbroath have added their support by buying Fairtrade in our local shops and supporting our Fairtrade events.
“We are so grateful that we have been giving a hand up to these countries not a handout.”
