This week’s Memory Lane photograph again comes courtesy of The Scotsman glass negatives archives.

It is a dramatic shot of the Bell Rock Lighthouse siting on inchcape Rock take from the air. According to the caption information it was taken in 1964, likely as a result of modernisation of the Bell Rock by the Northern Lighthouse Board. The upgrade was two-fold, first the living conditions of the lighthousekeepers were improved and secondly, the light mechanism was swapped out for a more efficient single-flashing apparatus which had previously been in use at the Chicken Rock Lighthouse off the Isle of Mann but which was deemed surplus to requirement after it had been automated.
