Tucked away in the village of Johnshaven lies The Anchor Hotel - a delightful restaurant, bar and hotel with an excellent menu.

The restaurant in The Anchor provides a very comfortable atmosphere in which to enjoy the delicious food.

Before the meal, we were served a selection of olives with brown bread with olive oil and balsamic vinegar for dipping.

To start, I opted for the pan-fried king prawns in a garlic and cream sauce whilst my partner chose the homemade soup which was served with a generous helping of farmhouse bread.

The prawns were cooked to perfection and the soup was thoroughly enjoyed.

The main meal was definitely the main event, if you like.

I went for the ‘Surf & Turf’- a fillet steak topped with fresh lobster, prawns in a garlic and lemon butter with beautiful sautéed potatoes and a selection of vegetables.

The steak, cooked to my liking - rare - was incredible.

The lobster was succulent and the prawns were juicy and tangy thanks to the garlic and lemon butter.

My partner went for the 8oz prime Scottish sirloin steak which was served with a peppercorn sauce, onion rings, glazed tomato and hand-cut chips - delicious.

The wine we had with dinner was the Robertson’s Wide River Viognier and the Freedom Cross Pinotage, a red and a white which were also thoroughly enjoyed.

For dessert we had the chocolate fondant which was served with ice cream and the really tasty sticky toffee pudding, served with Mackies ice cream and butterscotch sauce.

Afterwards we had two gourmet Matthew Algie coffees which topped the meal off.

The extensive menu at The Anchor means there is something to suit everyone’s tastes.

The Anchor Hotel restaurant is open from 5.30 until 9 p.m. every day apart from a Monday.

The restaurant can comfortably sit 22 and is available to be hired for functions.
