DANCE company ‘Root 2’, which is part of local initiative Showcase the Street, won first place at the Ultimate Scottish Streetdance Championships Under-18 section in Glasgow.
‘Root 2’ won the event despite fierce competition from other groups from all over Scotland.
Choreographed by Kalubi Mukengia and with outfits by Susan Clayson of Clay Designs, Dundee, ‘Root 2’ are drawn from Showcase the Street projects in Arbroath, Dundee, Blairgowrie and Forfar.
Showcase the Street are a charity with about 1,500 young people who take part in their dancing projects each week - but this is the first win the charity has achieved.
All the dancers involved with the project are delighted that they have now put the charity and their own projects on the streetdance map.
Fergus Storrier, who chairs the charity as a volunteer, said: “This was a great achievement and the young people should be very proud.
“All of them are great dancers but as a team they showed they can be champions as well.
“I’d like to thank Kalubi, who teaches the dancers, and Susan Clayson, who designed the outfits as well as helping out with hair and make-up.”
Showcase the Street continues to look for new members and they will also soon be starting up new projects in rural Perthshire and Aberdeenshire.
