Every gravestone in Arbroath Abbey’s burial ground has now been recorded and as part of a major research project by an Arbroath man.
Robert Duncan has photographed, recorded and transcribed all of the gravestones in the Abbey and compiled all of the information in a 900 page document, which also contains over 6,000 pictures.
And on Monday, he handed over a copy of his work, which took 13 months to complete, to Angus Archives and Arbroath library, where people will be able to access the information he has amassed.
Mr Duncan, an electrical engineer by trade, has always had an interest in history after joining the History and Antiquary Club aged 22.
He said: “Nothing like this has ever been done for Arbroath Abbey before.
“I enjoy finding oddities in the gravestones and research and the study has been 13 months of sheer frustration. However, I have taken immense enjoyment from it and I have to thank Fiona Scharlau from Angus Archives for all her help.”
