Arbroath’s Whitton sisters will run in the Edinburgh Marathon Festival this month to thank Yorkhill Children’s Hospital for saving one of their lives.
Keen athletes Isla (10) and Kayleigh (8) are taking part in the Junior Races at EMF on May 30, running two and 1.5 kilometres respectively.
The girls, who will race on May 30, wanted to raise money for the Glasgow hospital to say thank you for performing life-saving heart surgery on Kayleigh when she was three months old.
Born in 2007, an underlying condition was discovered in which her heart was only working at 10 per cent of function.
Kayleigh was rushed to Ninewells Hospital and doctors operated to try and correct a narrowing of her aorta.
“It was a huge shock at the time but family supported my husband, Greig, and I during the process,” said mum Jacqui.
“The girls are also both very happy to have raised hundreds of pounds for Yorkhill.”
The whole family are going down to Edinburgh to support the girls during their challenge.
“I am excited but a little bit nervous as I’ve never run that far before,” Kayleigh admitted, while Isla added: “I am very excited about the race, but I hope it doesn’t rain!”
At time of print the total was £490. To donate to the cause please visit www.justgiving.com/jacquiwhitton/
