A former Royal Marine was remembered at his local hostelry, Arbroath’s Millgate Bar. Former Commando Colour Sergeant Jim McPike was 71 years old when he passed away last Saturday.

He was mentor to many young Marines, putting them through their paces when he was a physical training instructor and guiding them through their training. Jim served with many Commando units but was latterly at 45 Royal Marine Commando at Condor where he was a Company TQ with X Company.

In civilian life he was a janitor at Ladyloan Primary School where he was very popular with staff and pupils alike. On Friday evening, former colleagues from 45 Veterans Scotland held a minute’s silence at their monthly meeting and then relocated to the Millgate Bar where they presented the landlord Chris Henderson with a Royal Marine memorial plaque which will be mounted near Jim’s regular chair at the pub.
