Conjuring up as much pedal power as they can to make the 600-mile trip from Arbroath to Portsmouth by bike are former Royal Marine Chris MacMillan, his daughter Danielle and her partner Alan Twaddle.
Mr MacMillan received an old recumbent bike from a Portsmouth Charity Bike Centre and lovingly restored it with the help of Angus Bike Chain.
Persuaded by some gentle family joking to ride the unusual bike to Portsmouth, Danielle and Mr Twaddle couldn’t let him go alone and insisted on making the long journey a family effort.
“We can’t wait to raise money for charity and see parts of the United Kingdom we probably would never see,” said Miss MacMillan.
The dedicated team have upped their cycling hobby from the occasional monthly jaunt to a four time a week rigorous training schedule, hampered only by having to go to work.
“Its become a hobby we all love and we are lucky we all have such a keen interest in cycling because its a great bonding session for us every weekend.”
Miss MacMillan and Mr Twaddle are both from Arbroath and Mr MacMillan settled in town after finishing a 23-year career in the Royal Marines.
The team wanted to support Combat Stress as it was an issue close to Mr MacMillan. He said: “When my career came to an end I quickly found a job and ever since have loved being a lorry driver. I haven’t been affected in a negative way from my experience as a marine, however I recognise that people’s mental ill health issues can take years to surface long after their careers have ended.”
They are attempting the feat without the aid of a support vehicle and are carrying all of the equipment they will need on their bikes and bike trailers. To help prepare them Outdoor Action in Arbroath has stepped in to offer help and guidance in kitting them out for the week on the road.
“We are still very nervous but excited to start the adventure. As training progresses and we get fitter and our legs stronger I am sure the nerves will fade and the love of cycling will get us through every mile.”
