AN INDEPENDENT council candidate has rubbished claims that a mis-spelled election banner has hurt his campaign.
Peter Nield, who has been a councillor for the past 13 years and stood as an Independent at this year’s council elections, had a banner erected at the corner of the Westway Retail Park which mis-spelled his name.
Mr Nield explained: “My thoughts on this are quite simply that I am grateful for getting so much coverage.
“The banner was used during the last election and was given to me by a backer. Of course I knew my name was spelled wrongly, but I would never be so rude as to correct the person.
“The ethos of the message is trying to get my name out there.
“At the end of the day more people than I care to mention, including yourselves, have spelled it wrongly, but it’s about the name not the spelling.
“It went up on Monday night and I noticed it on my way to work yesterday morning, but I couldn’t do anything about it because I was at work.”
Mr Nield has since amended the X to a numeral one. He added: “Why would it do me any harm if most people think it’s spelled that way anyway?
“At least it shows I have backers and have people who are prepared to stand up and help me and to use prominent positions.
“Also it shows I have the trust of people I have served and worked with for the last 13 years.”
