ARBROATH’S new councillors were an overwhelmingly delighted bunch immediately following the election count this afternoon.

The Arbroath Herald managed to grab a few minutes with each of the new councillors, which we have distilled into the following election soundbites.

David Fairweather, Independent, re-elected for his work in the community. He said: “I’m delighted, absolutely delighted that the electorate have selected me to continue as a councillor for the next five years.”

Ewan Smith, one of the SNP youngbloods was starting to feel the pressure. He said: “I’m quite emotional to be honest. For the last year life has been emotional. I never envisaged standing for election.”

Alex King, SNP veteran said: “I’m relieved, obviously. Always at an election when you are running through the count you wonder whether you will come out the other end as a councillor or whether you will come out the other end at all.”

David Lumgair, Scottish Conservative and Unionist (SCU) is by his own admission a man of few words. He said: “I’m just delighted to be returned for the fourth time.”
