ST MARY’S Church, Arbroath, resounded to the wonderful piano playing of Joseph Fleetwood on Thursday evening.
The minister, the Rev. Canon John Cuthbert, explained: “Joseph, who has recently moved south, was in Scotland to give a recital in St Andrew’s and we were happy that he agreed to make the little hop across the Firth of Tay to come and play in Arbroath.”
There was a sizeable audience to appreciate the music which ranged from Bach and Mozart to Schubert and Rachmaninoff, with Joseph portraying the variety of styles with great ability. He presented the recital on his own Bluthner grand, which currently is being housed in St Mary’s until Joseph is properly settled in London.
St Mary’s will be making the most of having the piano for the time being, and the next recital will be given by John Cuthbert, son of the rector of St Mary’s. John graduated from the Royal College of Music last year, and was selected to be one of Foyle’s Future Firsts - a project organised between Foyle’s Bookshops and the London Philharmonic Orchestra in which newly graduated musicians are selected to further their training with the orchestra for a year and have the opportunity to play with them.
John’s recital will be on Thursday, November 29.
