Angus Council say the removal of parking for the public within Arbroath Bus Station has been carried out due to safety reasons.
The station underwent a £72,000 refurbishment recently which included making the stances wider to meet the needs of the modern fleet of buses using the facilities.
However, this has led to the removal of several disabled parking spaces as well as drop off and pick up spaces within the station.
And several car drivers who use the station have contacted the Herald to criticise the move saying it might affect elderly or disabled passengers.
Dave Watson told us: “On Friday I had a visitor coming by bus from Edinburgh and as she is elderly I said that I would pick her up from the Arbroath Bus Station.
“On driving to the bus station I found that no private cars are allowed in either to pick up or drop off passengers. I found this really bizarre especially after the upgrade.
“Luckily I managed to park in the Kwik Fit premises opposite and go across to meet her.
“I am astounded that when the upgrade was carried out that no thought was given to pick up or drop off areas and to make matters worse there is no adequate parking in the near vicinity.”
And Jim McGugan added: “The recent alteration has no bays for private cars and the bus station entrance bears a notice prohibition the entry of private cars.
“Can Angus Council please direct us to the alternative legal parking facilities for the able bodied, elderly, disabled and wheelchair bound passengers making use of our bus station?”
But an Angus Council spokesperson explained the removal of the spaces was to allow buses to reverse out of the stances safely.
She said: “The recent improvements to Arbroath Bus Station increased the width of the bus stance and increased the reversing space to bring the station up to the standard required for the modern fleet of buses which use the station.
“In order for these buses to safely reverse out of the stances an increased amount of space is required which has led to the unfortunate permanent removal of all parking.
“As space at the bus station is limited, we examined all possibilities to continue to provide car parking within the bus station or immediately outside on Catherine Street but unfortunately on safety grounds these options were not possible.
“Alternative car parking facilities is available in Arbroath, including on-street parking at Millgate where there is the opportunity to park for up to 30 minutes for dropping off or meeting passengers.
“With the exception of Service X7, all other buses which call at the bus station also stop elsewhere within Arbroath. Most of these stops have on-street parking close by where cars can stop and either drop off or meet passengers.”
