Martial choral music for shoppers

ARBROATH’S very own Military Wives will be appearing in the town this weekend to raise money for the armed services.

The Military Wives Choir (MWC) Condor, as the group is now officially known, will be singing on Saturday in Tesco between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.

The group of ladies, all wives of serving members of 45 Commando based at RM Condor, were invited to take part in the Military Wives’ latest album ‘Stronger Together’.

Debbie Rogers from MWC Condor explained how they became involved in a national production that eventually involved 674 choir members from across the UK.

She said: “The Military Wives Choir approached us and asked if we would sing the backing harmonies to a couple of tracks on their new album.

“So we agreed and they sent up one of their recording artists to our church at Condor.

“We went down to London for the album launch and now we are officially affiliated with the Military Wives Choir.

“The new album is called ‘Stronger Together’ and we are on that song which is track number three, I know that because I’ve played it quite a lot recently!”

The single ‘Stronger Together’ is written by Military Wives Choir musical director Gareth Malone and record producer Jon Cohen.

MWC Condor’s gig at Tesco Arbroath came about on November 5 when Debbie visited the shop. She said: “The day the album came out I went down to Tesco to buy my copy and I got talking to the customer services manager.

“She asked us if we would come down to the store and sing for them over Christmas and I said we would be delighted.

“We’ll be singing a few songs from the album, some church songs and a few Christmas carols.”

Debbie hopes this gig will raise the profile of MWC Condor among the people of Arbroath. She said: “We’ve done so many things for charity since the album launch. We’ve sung at the Remembrance Day service, the Trafalgar Day service and on Saturday (tomorrow) we will be singing at the Officers’ Mess Ball.

“We really just want the town to get behind us. Unless you are a military wife people don’t know anything about what we’re doing.”
