Male Voice Choir scholarships

ARBROATH Male Voice Choir is offering scholarships of £150 to young men aged 17 or 18 to join them for their two big concerts in the coming year.

The 45-strong choir is experiencing something of a revival, having had international diva Lesley Garrett as their guest at two sell-out concerts in the Webster Memorial Theatre in March.

Now they would like to offer some younger male singers in Angus the opportunity to join them on stage this season.

Choir president Richard Irvine explained: “This is an exciting opportunity for young men who enjoy singing. First of all, it’s great fun, but they will also learn the discipline of singing in four-part harmony and will get lessons in voice production and sight-reading.

“An added plus for them is that this sort of community involvement looks good on a CV when you are applying for jobs, or places at university or college.”

The young singers are asked to sign up with the choir for a year and get paid £75 after the Christmas concert and £75 after the annual concert in March.

The scholarships are open to young men throughout Angus and the choir is hoping that local schools will encourage their fifth and sixth-year pupils to apply.

Mr Irvine continued: “Our repertoire is fairly wide. We sing everything from light classical numbers, songs from the musicals, folk songs to pop. It’s a great chance for young men to be part of a larger community group and to appear on stage with the likes of Arbroath Instrumental Band and this year’s annual concert guest, Margaret Keys.

“Margaret is a young Irish soprano who appeared in the BBC talent show ‘How do you solve a problem like Maria?’ and was awarded the BBC Fame Academy Award in 2008.”

Selection for the scholarship is by private audition with the choir’s musical director, when the applicant is asked to sing a song of his own choice.

Richard urged people to have a go, “Anything can happen if you let it!” he stated.

Choir rehearsals start again next Monday, August 27, in Knox’s Church hall, Arbroath, but scholarship applicants can apply up to the middle of September. For further information and an application form phone choir secretary Jay Ferrier on 01241 876428 or e-mail
