Although there was a smaller than usual turnout for the Arbroath Speakers Club meeting on Thursday (October 9) at the Meadowbank, president Robert Peat was pleased to welcome four guests to the meeting.
Those present enjoyed a great evening that saw club vice-president Sharon Cummings pass her showpiece speech with flying colours.
Evaluators Jim Gibb (Strathmore Speakers Club) and Elisabeth Hill were in no doubt that this 10th speech took Sharon through to the next (advanced) level of the Speakers Guide.
Katy Webster, a relatively new member of the Arbroath Club, chaired her first Topics Session based on a series of quotations drawn from a number of classic films including ‘Casablanca’, ‘Psycho’, ‘The Godfather’, ‘The Terminator’, ‘Apollo 13’ and ‘Gone with the Wind’ that not only tested the impromptu speaking skills of Lis Hill, Jackie Stewart, Duncan Stewart, Jim Ratcliffe, Robert Ramsay and Robert Peat but also sent other members on a journey down memory lane.
Club president Robert Peat handed over the meeting to the speaker’s chairman John Winterton who introduced Jim Christie who gave an emotional reading of letters sent by two young men caught up in the carnage of World War One and Norma Findlay who delivered an impromptu speech for which she was allowed 15 minutes to prepare.
The evaluators for these speeches were Eric Buick and Robert Ramsay. General evaluator was Robert Hill, the Arbroath club’s education director.
The date of the next meeting is Thursday, October 23. The annual Open Meeting will be held in the Stables Bar at the Meadowbank on Thursday, November 6, at 7.30 p.m.
A very warm welcome will be extended to anyone interested in attending either meeting.
