A bike mad Arbroath girl has been devastated by the theft of not just one bike, but two in the last few weeks.

Hayshead Primary School pupil Sophie Gowans (10) had her prized pink Vivid Apollo mountain bike stolen from outside her home on Ernest Street on Saturday, April 19.

And on Sunday thieves struck again.

Her mum, Shona, explained: “We have a shed we share with our neighbours and we keep everything in it. We got some new neighbours and they had filled the shed with lots of rubbish.

“We had to leave the bikes outside overnight and the next day it was gone.”

Of the three bikes outside their home it was only Sophie’s bike that seems to have been targeted.

Shona added: “An old wreck of a bike was dumped outside the house. The police think it was junkies doing a swap.”

Fortunately for Sophie she won a replacement bike, described as a bronze colour, at a raffle at Hayshead’s spring fayre but that, too, was taken.

Shona continued: “We think it was quite early in the morning, because I had secured all the bikes in the shed.

“Sophie had gone out in the morning with her friends and came back for lunch and then it was gone. This was around 12ish.”

According to her mum Sophie has been distraught. Shona said: “She was just grateful to have a bike again. She was very, very upset obviously.

“She’s always out on her bike, the moment she gets home she’ll be out on it. She just loves cycling.

“It took me 15 months to save up to buy the bike.”

Shona hopes that someone can shed light on where the bikes are so that they can be returned. Anyone with information should contact Police Scotland on their non-emergency number of 101.
