Legendary UK rock band Status Quo will be headlining this year’s Montrose Music Festival.

The band, which recently released their 100th single since forming in 1968, will take to the stage on Friday, May 23, at Montrose East Links, as part of the music festival, which runs from May 23 to 25, it was announced yesterday (February 25).

Status Quo founder member Francis Rossi said: “Playing live, outdoors is what we love to do. We’re really looking forward to being part of the Montrose Music Festival, which attracts bands from across the UK, and entertaining our Scottish fans. It’s set to be a special concert.”

Status Quo have recorded 64 British hit singles – more than any other band - 22 of which were in the top 10, the first of which was ‘Pictures of Matchstick Men’, which reached number seven in January 1968.

To date, the band has sold 118 million records and made 106 appearances on BBC TV’s Top of the Pops.

Its founding members, Francis Rossi and Rick Parfitt, are joined in the current Quo line up by keyboard player, Andrew Bown, and bassist John ‘Rhino’ Edwards and drummer Leon Cave.

In 1981, Status Quo became one of the first recipients of the coveted Silver Clef Award, presented by the Nordoff Robbins Music Therapy Trust for outstanding services to British music.

Montrose Music Festival annually attracts more than 8,000 people and this is the first time the event will host an outdoor event of this scale.

A significant arena will be erected on the East Links to accommodate thousands of Quo fans.

Montrose Music Festival, or MoFest as it has become known, has been running for seven years, over which time it has attracted acts such as Toploader, Eddi Reader, Deacon Blue and The Proclaimers.

David Paton, chairman, said: “The festival has grown year on year, since it was established in 2008, and 2014 is set to be bigger and better than ever before, as we welcome Status Quo to Montrose.

“Status Quo are legendary and always put on a great show and we’re delighted to confirm them as our headline act. It will certainly be a night to remember and tickets are expected to sell fast.”

The gates for the Status Quo concert open from 6 p.m. and this is the only ticketed event of MoFest 2014.

Early bird tickets, priced £37, will be available to buy at the Links Hotel on Friday (February 28) and Saturday (March 1) from 10.30 a.m to 12.30 p.m. or online at www.ticketline.co.uk.

The rest of the weekend’s entertainment is free of charge with a range of bands, of all styles and genres, playing at a range of venues in the town
