Relay For Life teams celebrate reaching the 50,000 milestone for cancer charity at Arbroath Cricket Club

With four months still on the clock Arbroath’s Relay For Life teams have exceeded their total from last year with upwards of £50,000 in the pot.

“When adding the total paid online to the money that our teams have in the bank, we realised a couple of weeks ago that the running total was already over £50,000 but kept it under wraps in the meantime as we wanted our wonderful Relay teams to be first to hear the news,” said Ian Angus, Relay Chair.

At a team meeting on Tuesday evening at Arbroath Cricket Club Mr Angus praised teams for the amazing feat of eclipsing last year’s total a full four months before the date of this years event on September 20.

He revealed that the committee had done their sums a couple of weeks ago and came up with a figure in excess of the £45,008 total from last year’s Relay and it is increasing daily.

“Who knows, we could even double that,” said Mr Angus.

In a bid to inspire the crowd Mr Angus provoked: “shall we stop here?” To which there was a resounding ‘no’ from the Relay team representatives present.

“There is no thought of relaxing yet as everyone involved in Relay For Life is determined to raise as much as we possibly can, to help beat cancer sooner. With a whole range of events planned between now and September and still more to come, we can now kick on and make this year really special.”

Forthcoming events include a ladies night hosted by Team Limelight and a Ladies Night organised by Red Lion Loonies, an 80’s night at Green St Hall and an event with the intriguing title of Guns & Buns. A full list can be viewed on the Arbroath relay Facebook page.

Overwhelmed by the determination and success of teams Mr Angus thanked the teams from the bottom of his heart: “You are all just amazing.”
