Primary five pupils from Monifieth have been working through a list of titles like little bookworms as part of a literary competition.

School children from the Grange, Seaview, Auchterhouse, Birkhill, Liff, Mattocks and Murroes primaries have had their noses stuck in the books of Jenny Nimmo, Geraldine McCaughrean, Kaye Umansky, Neil Gaiman and Shoo Rayner in order to pick their favourite author.

The competition is held annually and aims to encourage reading for enjoyment among young people and this year it was a joint victory for Kaye Umansky and Jenny Nimmo.

The winners were announced at a special presentation at Seaview Primary School on Thursday and there were lots of fun things to do.

Entertainment was provided by Mrs J. Athey, depute head of Birkhill School; Sylvia Main, literary development officer; Hazel Cook, Monifieth librarian; and Laura Stewart, senior library assistant.

There was also an anagram competition for all to complete and a special mystery box game.

Prizes were also presented to pupils as part of a book review competition of the novel ‘How To Train Your Dragon: How To Betray A Dragon’s Hero’ by Cressida Cowell.

Winners were: Dara McGrath, Ellie Parker, Jamir Maroto, Emily Reid and Hanah Harper.
