Robert and Jean Nicoll celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary recently.

Robert and Jean Nicoll from Monifieth celebrated 65 years of marriage on May 28 in quiet reflection of their happy life together.

Jean was brought up in Letham and worked for Angus County Council first in the Motor Taxation Office and then in the Rates Department.

Rob grew up at Mill of Brighty which was farmed by his father and where Rob then worked.

His grandfather came to live in Letham when he retired, just across the road from Jean’s home. Rob became a regular visitor and eventually he and Jean met.

A few years later the couple married in the County Hotel, Forfar, by Reverend J. O. Westwater. Life was very different in 1949 - food was still rationed but living on a farm made things easier.

In 1953 Rob took over the Mill of Brighty farm.

Jean took on the role of a traditional farmer’s wife, on call to help out when needed.

“Farming changed a lot in our time as horses gave way to tractors,” Mrs Nicoll reminisced.

When the couple retired their eldest son Jim took over. Their younger son David now lives and works in Perth.

Mr and Mrs Nicoll have six grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.

“We have had a good life together and have been a good team,” said Mrs Nicoll.
