An Arbroath magician has abracadabra-ed his way to raising around £2,000 for this year’s Arbroath Relay For Life.

Illusionist, mind-reader and man of mystery Michael Brandie took on an all day magic marathon challenge at the Abbey Theatre, performing a 45 minute show every hour from 10 a.m. until the last show ended at 9.45 p.m.

Although two shows were cancelled due to lack of numbers Michael was delighted with the response. he said: “I think we’re looking at somewhere in the region of £2,000, certainly between £1,900 and £2,000.

“We were told just after 5 p.m. that we had broken the £1,000 on ticket sales alone, but you’ve also go the sale of tea and coffee and the tombola to take into account as well.

“I’m over the moon. There were a couple of times over the day I was nearly in tears. It was really quite overwhelming.”

Certainly when the Arbroath Herald caught up with Michael at the 8 p.m. show he was just as polished, entertaining and fresh as usual, wowing the crowd with some old favourites as well as new material. According to Michael having a supportive audience helped.

He said: “When I walked out and saw the crowd it gave me a boost. The 6 p.m. show was the turning point because it was the first of the big crowds. It was a full house and there was even a bit of a standing ovation and that helped me get through.”

Michael added: “I would like to say a big thank you to the Relay for Life Committee for their support and also for supplying volunteers.

“Without them there would be no show. There were points in the run up I had thought of cancelling it but if it wasn’t for Johnny and the Relay Committee there would not have been a show.

“I would also like to thank the Abbey Theatre Club, that was one of the best venues I’ve had yet; my wife Shelley for doing the light and sound all day; and the Round Table and LimeLight for selling tickets.”
