An Arbroath magician is hoping to conjure up some serious cash with a magical marathon in association with the Relay For Life.
Well-known local illusionist, sleight-of-hand master and magician Michael Brandie is in the middle of organising a marathon event of 12 45 minute magic shows in the space of 12 hours.
Michael explained: “I’m going to be taking it back to my roots and try to make it more intimate and about close up cards tricks.
“It’s going to be more than just 45 minutes of me saying ‘Is this your card?’ There’s so much more you can do with it. I’m hoping to put in a couple of ‘Don’t try this at home’ things as well.”
According to Michael the proposed show is his way of trying to give his best to the fund-raising for Relay For Life. He said: “I was walking about the Relay For Life and someone asked if I was going to do it next year. Then in November I thought I could do 12 hours of magic at the Race For Life and put it on Facebook. Johnny from the Race For Life committee contacted me and now it’s set up as an independent project.”
He continued: “I just thought it would be a good idea because I committed to doing the Relay For Life. When you give your word you can’t really back out of it.
“I’m a nurse so I understand that one in three people will be affected by cancer and I’ve had family affected by cancer.
“The 12 hours of magic marathon is something that fits perfectly into the idea of the Relay For Life - you just keep going at it. I thought it would be a novel way to raise money.
“It’s going to be awesome. It should be a great day out for the whole family.”
Currently a venue is being sought for the show and Michael plans to use a big screen projector to show his close-up tricks to a larger audience, for which he says the help of a technical expert in cameras would be much appreciated.
