The kindness of children showed when six year-old Ashley Murphy announced to mother Stephanie that she wanted to cut off her hair.

Following a TV programme that featured another young child who suffered from cancer and had lost her hair, Ashley decided to donate her ‘unnecessarily’ long locks to The Little Princesses Trust.

Ashley’s mum Stephanie Murphy said: “She came through to me after watching the programme and wanted to know why the girl on TV didn’t have any hair. I explained to her that some children who aren’t well lose their hair and they have to get wigs made for them and they use real hair to do it.”

Ms Murphy explained that Ashley went away and she thought nothing more of it.

“She came back to me later on told me that she had way too much hair and that she wanted to give hers away.

“I thought it might just be one of those things that children say so I left it for a bit. A week later she brought it up again and said she really wanted to do it. So she did!”

Older brother Daniel, 8, had nothing but praise for his little sister: “Do you know what, I’m just a really proud big brother,” he said.

The hair chop took place at Studio 54 in Carnoustie on May 3 and Ashley and Stephanie have managed to raise £520 for Maggie’s as well as the hair donation. She chose the charity as she could see where the money was going.

Ashley has chosen the Maggie’s Centre in Dundee to donate the money she has raised to and is giving her donated hair to the Little Princesses Trust. If you would like to donate to Ashley’s chosen cause Maggie’s Dundee visit http://www.justgiving.com/stephaniemurphy2.
