This weekend sees the official opening of Arbroath’s own cinema and the proprietor is hoping the community turns out to support them.
Over the last few weeks Chalmers Filmhouse, Queens Drive, has been trialling its cinema set-up in advance of today’s (Friday) official opening, and owner Andrew Henderson has been encouraged by the feedback.
He said: “We’ve not had a bad review to be honest, there have been compliments on the screen and the sound.”
Pauline Fisher wrote on Chalmers Filmhouse Facebook page: “Saw ‘Gravity’ tonight at Chalmers Filmhouse, went with open mind and was pleasantly surprised. The screen was no different from any other cinema, large and good quality. The sound was impressive, you can feel the bass in your stomach.
“Overall, my experience this evening is a positive one and I would encourage others to go along and give it a try.”
Christine Stockton added: “Spent a nice afternoon at Chalmers with my daughter and youngest granddaughter, looking forward to my next visit & hope they get lots of support from locals.”
Kelly Bennett wrote: “A lovely set-up. Far less crowded and formal in terms of seating arrangements than your average cinema theatre. Picture and sound quality were great too. The sofas and bean bags are a great idea, particularly for family viewings I would imagine.”
However, Andrew stressed that in order for the venture to work he has to overcome the poor reputation which the club had under previous owners attracted and rebrand Chalmers as a family-friendly social hub.
He said: “We’re trying to get away from the anti-social history that this place had.
“It’s just about selling what we’ve got. I definitely see there’s a demand for a cinema in Arbroath.
“For this to work we need to get the local people coming.”
Andrew hopes that with a bit more tweaking the summer will bring a host of Hollywood hits and at a grassroots level, some community cinema.
He said: “I would be interested if any film enthusiasts want to get involved and do an internal cinema club.
“If somebody wanted to put opera on a Monday that’s fine, we’re open and as long as it makes money.”
This weekend the cinema will be showing ‘The Angels’ Share’, ‘One Direction: This Is Us’, ‘Grease’ and the original ‘Star Wars’ trilogy back to back. For the full listings and times visit the Chalmers Filmhouse Facebook page.
