Supporters of Arbroath Abbey are to make a special presentation to the spiritual successors of the monks who founded the landmark.
At the latest meeting of Arbroath Abbey Action Group (AAAG) on Monday the members were shown a special framed photograph which will be presented to The Order of Tiron in June in recognition of their association with Arbroath Abbey
AAAG member Geoff Bray will make the presentation at Thiron Gardais, France, on Sunday, June 8, the 900th anniversary of the founding of the Abbey of Thiron.
Arbroath Abbey was founded by Tironensian monks in the 12th century and tended it from 1178 until the last monk passed away in 1606.
There is to be a specific commemorative ceremony called the ‘Inauguration of the Resting Area of the Scottish Abbeys’, at Thiron Gardais during their celebrations on June 8.
The AAAG members decided that this should be marked in some way and the framed photograph with appropriate wording was decided upon.
The AAAG would like to thank Wallace Ferrier for allowing his photograph of the Abbey to be used and also Garry Johnston of Turnkey Gallery for his donation of the framing service.
The Arbroath Abbey Action Group was set up in 2012 with the express aim of improving local knowledge of the abbey and highlighting its role in Scottish and world affairs, market the abbey successfully as a tourist attraction and to build on the links with the United States and France that the abbey represents.
Recent successes of the group have included the reinstatement of weddings at the abbey itself.
Historic Scotland is responsible for the maintenance of the abbey and runs a visitors’ centre which explores its long story and place in history.
