The creator of the Red Lichtie and Bell Rock tartan is close to fulfilling his dream of providing affordable kilt hire in his creations in Arbroath.

Designer Steven Patrick Sim has been using the sale of two of his spin-off creations, the Angus McLichtie and Belle McRock teddy bears to finance the plan.

Steven said: “I’ve just counted them and there are 51 bears left so I’ve gone through 150, about two thirds of the edition. The response has been amazing.

“It’s not just a teddy, people are buying the bears as heirlooms for their children and grandchildren.

“Sales of the bear have been very helpful for sure. It’s given me some funds to put to the kilt hire which hopefully should start in the first half of the year but it’s a sizeable investment for the full 40 kilts.”

A prize draw for a kilt has also been running for bear-buyers and he hopes to announce the winner once all the bears are sold. He said: “It’s definitely moving forward but I really need the support of the town and if I can get that I can move forward and the bears have been a fantastic help with that.”

Steven hopes that with possible funding from Creative Scotland the evolution of the Red Lichtie tartan may lead to a special, as yet unconfirmed, piece of art for Tartan Week 2014.
