Arbroath hosts its very own Ryder Cup in aid of charity

While there may be a ‘little’ golf tournament happening down the road at Gleneagles in September, for some local golfers their own version of the Ryder Cup comes to Arbroath this month.

On Friday, May 16, and Saturday, May 17, two teams of local golfers will mirror the famous Ryder Cup format as Europe and the USA battle it out over Arbroath’s Elliot golf links for the trophy and bragging rights.

The captains, players and their back-up teams will compete over two days with the winning team lifting the coveted ‘Arbroath Relay for Life Ryder Cup’.

Arbroath Artisan Golf Club will host the charity golf event with all proceeds going to Arbroath’s Relay For Life. Incredibly, the two teams have already raised in the region of £12,000 before a golf ball has been struck.

Just like in the actual Ryder Cup, the two teams will celebrate their efforts by having a meal together at Arbroath Artisan Golf Club on the Saturday evening before the presentation ceremony to the winning team.

After the formalities are over the entertainment will be provided by local singer Danielle-Leigh Emmerson.

Arbroath Relay for Life Chairman Ian Angus said: “We have tried this year to involve more people and different community groups in the Relay.

“This allows people who could not normally participate in Relay for Life to take part, and feel that they have contributed.

“The results have been fantastic and we cannot thank the people, businesses and various groups in Arbroath enough for their support.”

Europe’s team captain Scott Strachan said: “It is fantastic how we have been able to take part in this years Relay for Life by simply doing what we like doing best.

“To raise such a huge amount for such a great cause at the same time is the icing on the cake.”

If you want a taste of the Ryder Cup Relay style why not go along to Arbroath Golf Course on and to show your support for the golfers and Arbroath’s Relay for Life.
