Angus kids get set for Bookbug Week

Angus libraries have announced the details of their annual Bookbug Week celebrations, which will see thousands of young families across the region celebrating the national book-gifting programme by taking part in free events between May 19-25.

This year’s week is based around the theme of ‘Bookbug’s Big Sports Day’. Babies, toddlers and their parents and carers will gather at special events across Angus to enjoy sports-themed activities, rhymes, stories and songs.

Children who attend the events will also receive a special booklet of songs and rhymes from Bookbug Sessions with artwork provided by Cate James.

Bookbug Week in Angus events are taking place in each burgh in libraries, leisure centres or halls.

Bookbug in Angus is part of Scottish Book Trust’s national Early Years Programme, which supports the gifting of 720,000 free books to every baby, toddler, three-year-old and Primary One in Scotland every year. 5,030 children in Angus benefitted from this programme last year, with even more set to receive free books in 2014 and 2015.

Sylvia Main, literacy development officer at the council, said: “Bookbug Sessions are hugely popular and very beneficial for both adults and children alike. The sessions are stimulating, helping brain development and they provide a wonderful setting for bonding experiences between parent and child.”
