The Angus Ambassador Awards recognised some of the top talent on offer in our area at their awards ceremony last week.

On Friday night at the presentation evening in the Carnoustie Golf Hotel the culture, tourism and youth categories were saturated with winning entries from our patch.

Arbroath Sea Fest was awarded the Tourism Angus Award, sponsored by Piperdam Golf and Leisure Resort, for their successful running of the annual maritime event which this year attracted 28,000 people.

New cultural ambassadors for Angus are celtic rock group Gleadhraich from Carnoustie, who were presented with the Cultural Angus Award sponsored by Carnoustie Golf Hotel. Highly commended in this category was well-known Carnoustie watercolour artist Jim Dunbar.

The Youth Angus Award, sponsored by Dundee and Angus College, was presented to the pupils of Carlogie Primary School who were behind the successful Fairlogie Fairtrade cafe which was also recently named as best business plan in Europe at the Schools’ Enterprise Challenge awards.

Another young talent recognised and highly commended was Jessica Baillie from Letham, a highly decorated highland dancer who will compete in the World Championships next year.

Also highly commended was John Kerr who, since the age of 16, has run Kerr’s Miniature Railway in Arbroath, an iconic tourist attraction opened in 1935.

John Forster, director of Forster Energy Solutions and ambassador awards judge said: “This is the first year we’ve sponsored the Angus Ambassador of the Year award and it’s been a privileged experience to be involved from the start through the judging process then at the awards ceremony itself.

“All the finalists were outstanding and I’m sure a lot of people are very proud of Angus after hearing about them. I certainly am.”
