THE OWNERS of a cafe business on the West Port say the economic climate has forced them to close their day time cafe.
Tomorrow (Saturday), OBs will close its doors for the last time after opening in July 2004 as a cafe during the day and a youth drop-in at night.
However, a fall in sales has meant the business cannot carry on operating during the day and a decision has been taken to close.
A spokesperson for OBs said: “Over the last almost nine years we have tried to offer good food at reasonable prices as well as volunteering and work experience placements to a variety of people, some of whom have gone onto paid employment with us.
“Unfortunately the economic climate has had its effect on us like so many others and with a drop in sales we have found that we can no longer continue with the daytime cafe.”
But despite the closure during the day, OBs will be continuing their drop-in sessions on an evening.
The spokesperson continued: “We will continue to run our youth work activities in the evenings, this includes a girls’ group on Monday nights and a youth drop-in on Friday and Saturday evenings, all of which are aimed at secondary school aged young people.
“Our Hot Chocolate work will also continue with us giving out hot chocolate around the streets of Arbroath on Saturday evenings to young people congregating on street corners and parks.
Should anyone be interested in renting the premises from us during the day please ‘phone Sheila on 07752467654.”
At Christmas 2010 the premises suffered severe flooding when a burst pipe sent water gushing everywhere. However, OBs managed to clean up the shop and continue to trade until now.
And their spokesperson added: “We want to say a huge thank you to the many loyal customers that we have had, many of whom have been coming in since we opened in 2004.
“Our thanks also go to staff and volunteers present and past who have made OBs the cafe it has been.”
