SLIDESHOW: The biggest dook yet!

Waiting for Video...

OVER 70 people plunged into 2013 in the biggest Arbroath New Year’s Day dook to date on Tuesday.

The event, which is now in its third year saw 71 brave dookers get rid of the Hogmanay cobwebs by enjoying a bracing dip in the sea beside the harbour in aid of Cancer Research UK.

This year saw the venue of the annual dook shifted to Arbroath Lifeboat Station, which brought in even more crowds of supporters than usual.

And, already, the Angus committee of Cancer Research UK are delighted with £1,200 raised to date with more donations and sponsor money still flooding into the cause.

Once again, many took the opportunity to celebrate the new year in style with many dookers taking to the freezing water in fancy dress and as always the crew members from Arbroath RNLI were on hand to keep everybody safe.

And chair of the local cancer research committee, Alana Loudon was thrilled with how the third annual event went, which is quick becoming one of the town’s major fund-raisers.

She said: “The dook was a great success this year. We had 71 dookers and a huge number of spectators.

“We have raised approximately £1,200 to date and are expecting this to increase as sponsor money comes in.

“The amount raised and both the dookers and spectators increased this year and the committee are delighted with this.”

In previous years, the dook had taken place at the West Links, but this year’s venue of the lifeboat station proved a popular choice.

Alana explained: “It was very good to have this beside the lifeboat station as I think this helped draw the crowds. The Lifeboat Guild were there to provide hot drinks, which was very much appreciated by everyone.”

Now the local Cancer Research UK committee will turn their attentions to their next major fund-raiser which is the Relay for Life, which as always takes place at Arbroath United Cricket Club on Saturday, September 21.

But Alana added: “As the dook event keeps on growing - we will be doing it in 2014!”
