A DISTRICT nurse working in Arbroath and Carnoustie has spoken of her experiences of volunteering on-board the world’s largest charity hospital ship.

Sally Lindsay, has spent the past month on the Africa Mercy, which offers free medical care and humanitarian aid to some of the world’s poorest people.

It was the second time Sally has volunteered and she was stationed in Guinea where she assessed patients prior to their admission for surgery.

Sally said: “Having travelled previously in developing countries I knew that I wanted to help in some way, some day.

“One of the most memorable parts of volunteering onboard the Africa Mercy is meeting and helping the patients, most of whom have very little by Western standards, and have deplorable and often avoidable medical conditions.

“Volunteering on the Africa Mercy is really worthwhile and beneficial and Mercy Ships is an amazing charity that does great things to help the poorest of the poor in Africa. I think that, as a volunteer, no matter how much time and effort you put in, you get so much more back!”
