‘Relay’ amazed by cash raised

THE ARBROATH Relay for Life raised a grand total of over £40,000 it was revealed on Friday.

The Relay for Life committee came together at Arbroath United Cricket Club where a cheque for the tremendous sum of £40,113.84 was presented to Cancer Research UK.

The annual event sees teams enter the 24-hour relay at Lochlands, where they take it in turns to complete laps of the cricket ground.

The relay has turned into the town’s biggest fund-raising event and chair of the organising committee Alana Loudon was stunned with the amount raised.

She told us: “I’m delighted and really amazed with how much was raised because we just didn’t expect it.

“We only had four months to organise it so we would have been happy with £10,000 so over £40,000 is a wonderful total.

“The people of Arbroath always come out and support us and the relay is a great community event where everybody can get involved.

“We can’t thank everybody enough.”

Presenting the cheque to Cancer Research UK representative Richard Cowie, was cancer survivor Helen West, young helper Aidan Ritchie and captain of the team who raised the most money, Lorna Kydd.

Accepting the cheque Mr Cowie said: “I just want to say a huge thank you to the Arbroath Relay for Life committee, the teams and the community for all of their support.

“The money raised will go to fund research, which we would not be able to do without the support of amazing folk like the people in Arbroath.”

The committee have now set the date for the 2013 Relay for Life, which will take place on September 21 and 22 and people can already register their interest online.

Their next major fund-raiser will be the New Year’s Day dook at the West Links.
