THE VERY first Red Lichtie kilt was unveiled earlier this week.

On Monday graphic designer Steven Patrick Sim, the proud creator of the tartan invited the Arbroath Herald to the boardroom of Mackays boatyard to witness the opening of the package from kiltmakers Glenisla Kilts Ltd.

This was also the first time that Steven had set eyes on one of his creations and he was understandably excited. He said: “I’ve been absolutely itching to open that box. It has been quite overwhelming to see the finished product. It glimmers with these glowing lights and that’s what’s special about it, Arbroath deserves something special.”

From the conception to the unveiling the project has taken Steven around a year to complete and along the way he has gathered support from all corners, including The Royal Burgh of Arbroath Community Council, the Scottish Parliament and ex-pats and tartan lovers from as far afield as Australia and Canada.

Steven commented: “I can’t believe that this is actually happened and it’s sitting on the table. When I started this I didn’t really believe that it would come to this. It’s just totally grown. I realised after I designed it that I had to make it into a real thing and now that I have done it I can’t believe it. I hope it brings a lot of people a lot of enjoyment.”

On March 30 there will be an informal tartan themed gathering at the Town House Hotel on High Street which will act as the first public outing for the Red Lichtie tartan kilt.

Anyone interested in seeing the design firsthand is invited to come along from 6.30 p.m.
