Recalling a more ancient Perth
THE ABERTAY Historical Society’s contribution to the Dundee Afternoon Lecture Series this year will take place at 2 p.m. on Wednesday (February 6) in the D’Arcy Thompson Lecture Theatre, Tower Building, University of Dundee.
The speaker for this event, archaeologist Derek Hall, will talk about archaeological work in Perth. He explained: “More than 35 years of archaeological excavation have shown that the city of Perth has some of the best preserved archaeological deposits in Britain.
“With the final publication of the 75 High Street (Marks and Spencer) excavations, this talk will give an overview of what we are now able to say about daily life and work in the medieval town.”
In his lecture Mr Hall will also look at Perth’s European trading connections and the importance of these archaeological findings in shaping our understanding of medieval Scotland.
Derek Hall grew up in Elgin and studied at the Dorset Institute of Higher Education, Weymouth where he gained a Certificate in Practical Archaeology. From 1976 to 1980 he worked on archaeological sites throughout Scotland and England, and in 1980 he joined the Urban Archaeology Unit. In 1996 he was seconded to Historic Scotland as an Inspector of Ancient Monuments, before returning to SUAT as depute director until its demise in 2009.
