RAF veterans seek old comrade

AN ARBROATH man’s former RAF comrades are hoping to track him down for a reunion.

James (Jim) Ward, service number 1961928, is the subject of a search by former colleagues who are hoping to organise a reunion in Hereford, Herefordshire, home of their old training camp.

He joined fellow trainee cooks at RAF Hereford on a one year apprenticeship as part of No.4 Squadron 309 entry 1967/68.

At the time it was common for teenagers aged 15 or 16 to enter the armed forces to learn a trade. James served for around nine years and should be in his early 60s.

He was originally from Arbroath, but had also resided in Paisley, Renfrewshire.

Robert Willis, who served with James said: “We have tried many times to find James Ward, but there are so many listed on the electoral role that all my efforts have failed.

“If anyone can help us locate our lost comrade please contact me. Perhaps there is a family friend or relative who may be able to help. Jim Ward is the last of the original 22 squadron members to be found.”

Anyone with information on James (Jim) Ward can email robert.willis@wanadoo.fr or dave.thompson@thomco.co.uk.

RAF Hereford, also known as RAF Credenhill, was a non-flying training base and was taken over in 1999 as a depot for the Special Air Service.
