Pupils brush up on art skills

THE TESCO Bank art competition for schools rolled Hayshead Primary School on Tuesday for a special day of creative art.

Now in its second year, the National Galleries of Scotland, directly supported by Tesco Bank, is beginning the first of a two-part tour of schools around the country to promote visual art.

Both primary four classes at the Arbroath school enjoyed creative workshops developed to raise awareness of the National Collection and teach children new skills.

Working with paint, pastel and collage they created their very own pictures inspired by the painting ‘A Hind’s Daughter’ by Scottish artist Sir James Guthrie. The piece depicts a servant’s daughter tending to crops in a farm outside Berwickshire.

James Coyle, head teacher at Hayshead Primary School said: “We were delighted to welcome the Tesco Bank Art Competition for Schools roadshow team to Angus, where the pupils enjoyed a very special and inspiring day.”

The Tesco Bank Art Competition for Schools is Scotland’s biggest national art competition.

Over 6,200 children across almost every local authority in Scotland took part last year, with a mission to continue to widen accessibility to art.
