Police eager to solve train derailment mystery
three months after a train was deliberately derailed while passing through Inverkeilor, British Transport Police have renewed their appeal for information.
On November 4 last year, an Edinburgh to Aberdeen CrossCountry train came off the tracks while heading north past the village at around 9.45 a.m.
BTP officers believe a object was deliberately left on the line, which caused the train’s front wheels to derail, although fortunately nobody was seriously hurt.
It was also revealed that a group of youths seen near to the tracks on the night before the derailment may hold vital clues for the investigation.
Police are looking to speak to a group of four people with one of them wearing a grey or light coloured hooded top or trousers the night before the incident.
It is thought they were walking towards Bryanton House just before the Inverkeilor bonfire, which was held the night before the derailment.
Officers would also like anybody who may have photographs that were taken at the village bonfire night celebrations to come forward.
The investigation into the incident is being carried out by British Transport Police along with their colleagues from Tayside Police.
The Rail Accident Investigation Branch and the Office of Rail Regulation are also on the case.
In a bid to encourage witnesses or anybody with information to speak out, a £25,000 reward was put on offer.
This came from Network Rail, and rail operators CrossCountry, East Coast and Scotrail who use the line.
But so far it remains unclaimed.
