Organisers say big thank you for support

THE ORGANISERS of a Christmas soup kitchen for isolated people have expressed their thanks for making the event a success.

On Christmas Day the ‘Com’ Thigither’ social group put on a soup and socialising event to give people somewhere to go when they might otherwise have spent the day alone.

Katie Anderson, a learner engagement officer at Angus College and one of the organisers, was delighted with the turnout at the Volunteer Centre Angus on Guthrie Port.

She said: “We just want to let people know it was a huge success and at the busiest point we had 25 people aged between 16 and 80 there.

“We were overwhelmed with donations of soup, pies and money and we would like to thank everyone who gave up their time or donated something. Without their generosity it would not have been the success that it was.

“It has to be a general thank you because there were lots of anonymous donations from people putting in pots of soup and cash.

“The day was filled with great fun and laughter and we even had people up dancing.”

Representatives from the worlds of education, social work, unemployment and the Angus College student body formed the group in order to address what they saw as a desperate need.

Katie added: “We realise there’s a desperate need for a weekly thing like this to give people a reason to get up, shower and change and come out and meet people.

“We are currently waiting to hear about funding and we are hoping this will turn into a regular event and we look forward to keeping you informed.”

Anyone who donated a pot of soup for the event can collect their pot from the Volunteer Centre Angus.
